Cambridge Audio delivers yet another stunning effort for hi-fi enthusiasts of all types and budgets with the AXR Cambridge Audio have been very busy of late with the release of the flagship Edge range earlier this year, their first wireless earbuds this month and also a complete overhaul of its entry level products! Designed as a meatier and punchier amplifier with several additions to sweeten the deal, the AXR85 looks a hot prospect for anyone looking for a one-box-does-it-all product.

As the model name suggests, 85 watts per channel are on offer with the capability to drive 2 pairs of speakers should you have a large open space or an adjacent room to fill with sound. Four line-level RCA inputs plus a phono stage for turntables give plenty of options for analogue sources whilst a 3. The addition of a built-in Bluetooth receiver means that phones, tablets and most laptops can swiftly connect too without the need of cables limiting their movement.

Lastly, FM and AM tuners mean you can save up to 30 of your favourite radio stations. The front panel features an LCD screen with buttons below to toggle between inputs, speakers A and B, tone controls and radio presets. Drums are thick and chunky and with the distorted bass guitar fuzzed to the max the overall effect is a wall of sound that really gets the blood pumping. This is definitely an amplifier for those who like their volume!

Despite the various layers of keys and odd effects switching from left to right channels, the AXR85 manages a very able performance with a smoothly controlled sense of scale and soundstage. Instruments sound natural and in the room with you whilst the cohesiveness of the ethereal sounds still remain. It seems like Cambridge have raised the bar again with their new AX range and the value for money has proven to be absolutely top notch.

If you want a bit of everything from your hi-fi but are on a limited budget, the AXR85 surely has to be one to listen to with your own ears.

The AX series replaces the Topaz range and currently consists of a six-strong lineup. Apart from the neat styling, smoothly sculpted fascia edges and the use of a front support bar rather than individual feet which, admittedly, does look very smartI did struggle to find much to relate the AX models to their top-flight brethren, and Cambridge Audio itself didn't have much to say on the subject either.

The only other exception is that the silver model is no longer silver — it is 'Lunar Grey' — a very appealing colour that ensures the AX components stand out from any bog-standard silver competition. In the centre of the front panel is a digital display that carries information about source selection, volume level and various menu items. A fifth, 'Aux In', is available on the front panel through a 3.

Plugging into this front panel socket automatically selects the input but as the selector button is shared by the A1 input, you cannot forcibly select 'A1' while a plug is in 'Aux In'. Also at the rear are a set of good quality loudspeaker binding posts, while Cambridge continues its tradition of labelling inputs both the right way up and upside down, a simple but incredibly handy feature when leaning over the back of the amplifier trying to identify which is which.

Bearing in mind Cambridge Audio's outboard phono stages have typically fared very well indeed, having one included in this amplifier is potentially a big bonus. Finally, the unit has a front-mounted 6. This latter connection is not present on the more affordable AXC25 player. The amp and CD player are both supplied with Cambridge Audio's system remote control which, though perfectly functional, lacks the metal top plate of the handsets from the Azur range.

Both items are slick and refined, with only an occasional delay on the CD player's eject function betraying the affordable price of these separates.

The AX35 combination served up a clean, detailed and flowing sound with a pleasing weight and sense of impact to their performance that can often be lacking at this price level. Search form Search. No such problems here. The models have an impressive solidity about them, from their styling and build to the way the controls operate. The AXA25 makes do with conventional knobs for volume, input selection and so on, while the pricier! AXA35 looks rather more grown-up with a display and a menu system, creating a much less cluttered fascia.

As the model numbers suggest, the AXA35 is more powerful than its junior counterpart, delivering 35Wpc into 8 ohms rather than 25Wpc.

Python pulp scheduling

What also sets the AXA35 apart is the provision of a more than respectable moving magnet phono stage for a turntable, along with four line inputs, one of which is duplicated on — and overridden by — a 3. On which subject, the player itself is as simple as they come.

Like the amplifier, it has a user-configurable Auto Power Down circuit to save energy, and in common with all Cambridge products the socket labelling is repeated upside down at the top of the rear panel, which is handy when one is peering over the unit to make connections.

At the top end, things are slightly smoothed off by the amplifier, though the CD player used alone sounds rather bright and light. Listened to in isolation, the Cambridge pairing gets all the essentials of the music right and makes listening exceptionally enjoyable. For further information please visit: cambridgeaudio.

Follow us.The Edge anniversary series launched a year ago seemed to change this approach. And yet Cambridge Audio has just launched a new, cheapest AX series. Designed in the UK by its engineers, it uses innovative techniques sourced from the higher CX and Edge series. Both belong to the latest and cheapest XA series:.

Cambridge Audio AXA35 Review

Today Cambridge Audio introduces the AX series, a brand new range of hi-fi separates. Designed and engineered in the UK, AX has something to offer every music lover, hitting the perfect balance between performance and affordability. Consisting of a CD player, an integrated amplifier and two stereo receivers, the AX range takes design and innovation cues from Cambridge Audio's CX and Edge hi-fi ranges. Like those award-winning products, it uses the company's plus years of audio engineering expertise to deliver what Cambridge Audio has dubbed its "Great British Sound", a pure, unfiltered audio experience reflecting the artist's intentions—nothing added, nothing taken away.

There are four levels in this series: 25, 35, 85i Although it may seem that budget devices are the easiest to design and sell, in reality it is completely different.

If we are dealing with a specialist company and not a big concern, which is exactly the case of Cambridge Audio, the device must meet many pre-conditions, without which the company would not sell them with its logo. And that means costs—good sound always costs, regardless of what price range we are talking about. And if we increase the costs, we have to calculate the final price very carefully and balance everything so that it makes sense to make and sell such device and at the same time to offer a good sound.

By introducing new devices Cambridge Audio did seemingly impossible: they managed to keep the price from ten or even fifteen years ago. Because, let me remind you, the offer of budget audio components was divided into several price categories, used also by specialist magazines. I don't know how they did it, but it worked—AXC25 belongs to the first category if we turn a blind eye to 90PLN, and the AXC35 would be exactly in the middle of the second one.

It's not every day that entry level devices hit the market—at least not in present times. The introduction of the XA series is therefore an important event that—hopefully! The days when many inexpensive devices were sold are gone, but something started to change about four years ago. We also did. We focused on what we call the Great British Sound and turned directly to people who love music, to audiophiles.

Laughing Almost completely, it was a dead end. We can talk about it someday, but now it is enough to say that it actually ceased to interest us for several reasons. First of all, because everyone at Cambridge is a true music fan. Both share the same new Lunar Grey finish on the front panel, a nod to the exceptional Edge series, and a tapered central foot.

Together they draw the eye to the front panel and give the AX series the appearance of floating on air. Both include a new minimalist design language on the front with small silver buttons for playback control and a clean white LED display for track information. Round back there is simply a line output and power. These two units are near identical apart from the inclusion of a coaxial digital output on the AXC Under the hood Cambridge have taken great care to minimise interference from one component to another by carefully spacing everything out.

This care also extends to the DAC or digital-analogue convertor which turns that series of ones and zeros from your CD into the traditional analogue wave form. Cambridge have use a WM chip at the heart of this circuitry which is a great component at this price point.

Unlike the AXC25, you can choose to bypass the internal DAC and send the digital signal from your CD player out to an external unit which can do an even better job. One feature which was sorely lacking on the Topaz series of CD players was gapless playback. While not essential with Rock and Pop tracks, which tend to operate as stand-alone pieces of material. So how does all this new technology sound? For speakers we used our reference pair of Monitor Audio Bronze 2 which have a nice combination with warmer sounding components to compliment the sound from the units you can buy this whole package here.

To start we settle down with the new Bloc Party live album Silent Alarm. The flow of the album is entirely uninterrupted by gaps in the playback, making for a pleasing overall experience. The Cambridge does a great job of delivering a well-timed performance on a very excited track without getting too carried away.

Every note is delivered just as it should be. You can tell Cambridge Audio have really taken their time to produce a beautiful piece of equipment here. The AXC35 adds a co-axial digital output.Posted By Anna Moore on Aug 17, Finding the sweet spot can be difficult, but victory brings great rewards. Setting up an audio system in your home will require you to create a checklist of your wants and needs.

Usually, gear is made to appeal to high-end audiences, or appeal to the budget crowd. As with any other piece of audio equipment, the AXA35 will bring a couple of pros and cons to the table. Most people seem to think that it looks pretty good — that has to count for something.

But naturally, there are some disadvantages to consider. Most notably, a pretty mediocre remote. The AXA35 also delivers a couple of its own unique features.

Right now, audio gear is mostly heading in the direction of wireless connectivity. Part of the reason why is because every other device is going wireless, so running your audio equipment that way just fits the trend.

But another part of the reason is because these days, you can find wireless codecs that perform pretty much as good as anything you can draw from a wire. In other words, wireless technologies have really caught up recently. So unless you have a reason to push for a wireless setup, you can save a couple of bucks by running a more traditional layout like the AXA Personally, I think it looks like a glorified VCR.

Strangely enough, one of the most interesting attributes about this design is actually the feet. The underbelly of the machine gives off the illusion that though the whole thing is floating. Clearly this equipment is bucking a lot of trends. So when you turn to its backside, it should be no surprise what you see looks like audio equipment which might have been made 2-decades ago.

In usual form, the AV inputs are a tad overwhelming at first sight.
